Beyond the $7 Sandwich: A Lesson in Compassion and Perspective
Lessons Between Bread Slices: How a Simple Sandwich Taught Me Gratitude.

There are moments in our lives that leave an indelible mark, etched deep into our memories. One such moment for me occurred during my time working in Denver. It was a day consumed by the relentless demands of work, leaving me no time to eat or even catch a glimpse of sunlight. The chair I sat on seemed to conspire against my comfort, adding to the strain of the day. Though I had intended to work from a nearby coffee shop, even that small luxury felt out of reach amidst the whirlwind of tasks.
At the stroke of 6:30 PM, I seized the opportunity to escape for food. I drove to a nearby restaurant, standing there, staring at my phone, I realized I need to grab water. Standing before the fridge, faced with the choice to pay $5 for one bottle convenience or go to the store for a case. A small voice urged me to seek out a better deal at the store, and eventually, I relented.
Arriving at the store in my white Jeep, I hurried inside and swiftly grabbed a case of water. It was there that I encountered a young man, his hands stained with dirt, his demeanor worn and defeated. He may not have been more than 16 or 17 years old, later on he told me he was 20, but I believe it was to protect himself. Clutching a handful of change, he humbly asked if I could spare a dollar for a sandwich.
Declining his request for cash, I offered to purchase the meal with my credit card instead. His eyes sparked with gratitude as we made our way to the sandwich section. Sensing his disappointment at the limited options within his budget for $5. I encouraged him to choose a footlong sandwich instead, reassuring him that it was my treat. I will never forget his face when he said, “Are you sure? It’s $7.” I immediately said yes and to grab chips and a drink as well. As he deliberated over his choice of drink, I couldn’t help but pause and inquire about his story.
He shared with me the challenges he faced, caring for his mother who battled dementia while grappling with the sudden loss of his living arrangements due to his cousin’s incarceration. Forced to fend for himself through odd jobs like gardening, he had been unable to secure shelter due to the demands of his work schedule.
As we completed our purchase, he expressed his gratitude, explaining that my generosity had provided him with enough funds to afford transportation to work the following day.
In moments like these, when our paths intersect with those facing adversity, we are reminded of the fragility of life and the importance of extending kindness to others. It’s these encounters that serve as poignant reminders of the blessings we often take for granted, grounding us in humility and gratitude.
For most of us, buying a $7 sandwich is something we don’t think twice about. It’s important to recognize how fortunate we are to have that mindset and to appreciate the luxury it represents.
